Can these berms be used for common liquid spills and more hazardous chemicals?

Accepted Answer

Our berms come in a variety of Hyprene™ fabric options that can be used for less hazardous fluids, such as water or oil, and in more robust options that can handle acids and chemicals and even resist abrasion. For example, the yellow Hyprene™ XC fabric is best for water, oil, and cold temperatures down to –67°F (–55°C). However, the black Hyprene™ XR-5 fabric is much better for acid, chemical, and abrasion resistance, while handling temperatures down to –22°F (–30°C).

Where should I place a berm on a jobsite to maximize effectiveness?

Accepted Answer

Portable Secondary Containment Berms are best placed where you have valves, stored pails and barrels, or even small equipment such as heaters or generators to prevent contamination. Their flexibility to fold up, move, and redeploy is arguably their best feature. They can be used wherever you store objects that pose a spill risk and require secondary containment.

How do I choose the right berm size for my application?

The primary thing you need to know is how much volume you’re dealing with and what your local safety regulations require for compliance. For example, Environment Canada says that a berm “must be able to hold a volume greater than or equal to 110% of the largest tank or storage container and cover at least the entire surface underneath.” Whereas EPA Code 40 CFR 264.175 states, “The containment system must have sufficient capacity to contain ten percent of the volume of containers or the volume of the largest container, whichever is greater.” *Always consult your safety regulations, like OSHA, to get the correct coverage to be compliant.

Can the berms withstand vehicles or equipment being driven over them?

Portable secondary containment berms are designed for forklifts, dollies, or other vehicles to drive over the collapsible foam walls. Both the 6” plank and the 3” roll wall are welded in to ensure maximum performance of the berm, and they will fold over and pop right back up after a vehicle or other transport rolls in or out.

What's “secondary containment” and why does it matter?

Secondary containment is an earthen dyke or other structural system configured to contain the contents of a primary containment tank or vessel in the event of failure. Secondary containment is ultimately used to protect the surrounding environment while the leak is stopped on the primary containment tank or vessel. On many job sites, having a secondary containment set-up for portable containment units is a regulatory requirement and varies depending on each jobsite.

What's the difference between the 6” plank wall and the 3” round enclosed foam wall?

Accepted Answer

The 6” plank allows for an increased volume in smaller configurations. However, berms with the 6” plank have a maximum size of 6’ x 8’. The 3” round enclosed foam creates a shallower containment berm that retains its upright shape when larger equipment drives over and parks on it. The 3' can be customized in much larger sizes (20’ x 50’ or 30’ x 60’) compared to the 6” plank wall.

Do the berms work when full or partial containment is needed?

Secondary containment specifications can vary by job site. In most instances, only partial containment is needed. This means that the secondary containment berm is designed to hold a “reasonable amount” of spill from the primary tank until the leak can be stopped. However, our portable secondary containment berms can be adjusted to provide full or partial containment, accommodating fluctuating jobsite safety regulations.
